How to stew apples
To stew an apple you must soften it in a pan of boiling water over a stove. Slice it up, place it in the water with a heap of caster sugar and once it has reached boiling point leave for five minutes. Stir and boil for another two minutes then your stewed apples should be ready to enjoy.
Are apple seeds poisonous?
The seeds of an apple do contain small amounts of cyanide which, when over-consumed, is poisonous to humans. Whilst this is usually not enough to do harm, some experts advise staying away from apple seeds and removing the core of your apples before eating.
How to make apple sauce
Following the same steps as you would to stew your apples, once cooled remove the stewed apple mixture from the pan and place into a food processor. Process the apples until they reach the correct consistency of apple sauce and then serve on the side of pork, glazed ham or a recipe of your choice.
How to store apples
Firstly, choose a variety that will last if you aren't planning to eat your fruit quickly. For example, Granny Smith varieties have a thicker skin and tart flavour that lasts for longer than a Golden Delicious, which is sweeter and has a thinner skin. Don't store apples near bananas in a bowl, or they will spoil faster (banana skins contain ethylene which speeds up the ripening process.) In the fridge, keep them away from potatoes and onions, as well as any strong-smelling foods, as apples will absorb the aromas. Also, don't stack them, as this can lead to brown spots and damaged skins. If you plan to eat your newly-purchased apple within 2-3 days, it will be fine on the counter or in a fruit bowl. In all other cases, store the fruit in the crisper drawer of your fridge, where it will stay reasonably fresh for up to a whole month.
